We work alongside three colleges in the Glasgow region; City of Glasgow College, Kelvin College and Clyde College Scotland. Colleges now offer a range of subjects and qualification levels including training in vocational careers. Higher Education (HE)

There are four Universities in Glasgow and the surrounding area; Glasgow University, Strathclyde University, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of the West of Scotland. Each university offers something different in terms of subjects and experiences for students and it very much depends on what each young person wants to do. All universities will hold open days which are opportunities to visit a university and find out more about all aspects of university life.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are becoming the route of choice for many young people and the expansion of the apprenticeship family means that young people can now undertake Foundation, Modern or Graduate level apprenticeships:

Foundation Apprenticeships

You sit a Foundation Apprenticeship over two years, usually starting in fifth year with your Highers and National 5s. The difference is, you spend time away from school, at college and with an employer. So you get real, practical work experience.

  • Young people earn a qualification that employers recognise and the skills they need to start a career in that industry.
  • Open up their options after school.
  • Foundation Apprentices can gain accelerated entry to a Modern Apprenticeship in the same subject.
  • If progressing to university, the practical experience looks fantastic on a UCAS or college application.
  • If heading straight into work, young people will have the skills needed for that type of job.

Foundation Apprentices also learn skills like timekeeping, problem-solving, and teamwork. So no matter what they want to do, they'll be just the type of person employers are looking for. It's a chance to try a career out – so young people can decide if it's right for them.

Modern Apprenticeships

Through a Modern Apprenticeship, young people learn on the job and get the experience they need while working towards an industry-recognised qualification. Whether they're thinking about the future, job hunting or want to learn new skills, a Modern Apprenticeship could be for them.

  • There are more than 80 types of Modern Apprenticeship across hundreds of jobs, so there are plenty of options.
  • Young people get the experience employers are looking for – from skills for work, to handy things like timekeeping, taking responsibility and teamwork.
  • It’s a real alternative to full-time college or uni. By learning on the job, young people get to put your skills to the test right away. Modern Apprenticeships are designed with employers and industry in mind, so that they get the best possible training.
  • The qualification is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
  • Modern Apprenticeships are paid opportunities.

Graduate Apprenticeships

Through a Graduate Level Apprenticeship, young people spend most of their time at work, learning on the job – and normally about a day a week at university. So, what they learn goes right into practice and the work they do goes towards their uni assignments.

  • Instead of thinking about how things might happen in the real world, they'll be putting theory into practice. They'll be solving problems on real projects.
  • Young people are part of the industry from day one, instead of joining after a degree.
  • Everything they learn both at work and in the lecture hall counts towards their qualification.
  • Young people could study for a degree or even a Masters.
  • Employers help design Graduate Level Apprenticeships. So, young people can be sure the qualification and skills they get at the end are what they need for work.

Training

There is lots of training provision in Glasgow for young people who have left school and looking for support in developing their employability skills, securing paid work experience or just looking for advice and guidance ahead of striking out into the world of work.

Depending on your age, engaging with either Skills Development Scotland or the Department of Work and Pensions allows you to to match a course that best suits your current requirements.  It could be an Employability Fund 2 course which is all about personal development and guidance if you aren't quite sure what type of job you would like or it could be a sector specific course in an area such as mechanics, digital media or hospitality where you complete accredited qualifications and gain work experience all while in receipt of a training allowance.
