A round up of this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week
Thursday, 16 March 2017
DYW Glasgow supported an array of industry tours during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, in a variety of key sectors including hospitality, financial services and construction.
Six schools across the city were partnered with the Glasgow Marriott Hotel, The DRG Group, Santander, Clydesdale Bank, Tesco Bank and CCG, offering tours to over 90 young people.
The tours allowed an insight into each of the chosen industries, highlighting the variety of jobs in the sector and the different routes into each of these. There was a particular focus on apprenticeship opportunities.
When visiting companies such as Glasgow Marriot Hotel and the DRG Group, the young people learned about a range of positions in the hospitality industry including Front of House, Kitchen, HR and Marketing.
The DRG Group is set to increase its number of employees, from under 1,000 to 1,500, in Glasgow over the next three years, creating more jobs for young people with an interest in the sector.
Pupils interested in financial services visited either Santander, Clydesdale Bank or Tesco Bank to learn about apprenticeship opportunities, they also got the chance to learn about the role from a current apprentice, while some of the students were given the opportunity to design apps.
For those with a passion for construction, CCG invited pupils to its Anderson site, where the site manager and current apprentices shared their own experiences, discussed apprenticeships and the entry routes into the industry.
Alison McCrae, Senior Projects Director at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a great opportunity to inspire out city’s young people and help them shape their future.”
“It has been great to see major players in the hospitality, financial services and construction industries get involved and we are very thankful for their contributions this week.”
“We hope that we have managed to get the pupils who took part in each tour excited about their prospects."
