Positive outcomes for young people following Build Your Future event

On 20 April 2017, DYW Glasgow held Build Your Future – an event for young people interested in a career in the construction sector. The event was held in the Lomond Suite at Hampden Park Stadium.

The event had more than 60 young people in attendance and a cross-section of businesses within the construction sector hosted tables on the day.

Apprentices from GMG Contractors and CCG delivered talks for young people and gave them an insight into their experience of gaining a career in construction. One apprentice told the young people about his transition from working in the fast food industry to securing an apprenticeship in plumbing. The apprentices were relatable to the young people and strongly encouraged them to undertake an apprenticeship in the construction sector.

Paul Burns, a construction Careers Advisor delivered a motivational talk and was available throughout the event to speak to young people on a one-to-one basis.

I found the event really good and enjoyed speaking to the employers.  There was also a wide variety of employers to choose from.

So far I have had 2 phone calls from Tigers asking me if I am leaving school in June and if I am still interested in their training programme which I am. They said they would be arranging interviews so hopefully they will get back to me soon.

The DYW Glasgow team received extremely positive feedback from the employers after the event. Employers told the team that the event as a whole was entirely worthwhile and that they appreciated being able to speak to young people on an individual basis. Since the event: McTaggart Construction have told DYW Glasgow that they are meeting a young person from the event to discuss a Modern Apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating; TIGERS have contacted several young people to discuss training opportunities; Kier Construction have passed on some attendee details to their subcontractors; and Cruden have received over 30 applications for various apprenticeships.
