Young people secure employment as a result of DYW Glasgow Opportunity Fund
Monday, 25 June 2018
As a result of the DYW Glasgow Opportunity Fund, Values Into Action Scotland (VIAS), Glasgow Supported Employment Services (GSES) and Haggs Castle Golf Club received funding to support a group of five young people with learning disabilities to enable them to plan and run an event to showcase their skills and abilities directly to employers. VIAS and GSES wanted to engage employers who had not previously considered employing a young person with a disability and use the event to dispel common myths or misconceptions. The young people named the event “You Need Us”.
The five young people planned and undertook all the tasks involved including designing the marketing material; identifying and inviting appropriate employers; greeting employers at the event; taking breakfast orders and then serving breakfasts and refreshments. Following a couple of brief presentations from VIAS and GSES they then showcased their own skills and abilities in short individual presentations - anyone who has felt nervous speaking in public or at an interview will appreciate how difficult this is! The five young people were then able to chat informally with the employers who attended in an atmosphere which was far less intimidating than at a formal interview.
Two young people were employed directly after the event - one at Haggs Castle Golf Club in a front-of-house role and an another at Lochlie Construction in an administrative role. VIAS and GSES continue to support the three other young people to look for suitable jobs and continue to challenge common myths about employing someone with a disability.
