Hundreds of people throughout Glasgow – including parents, business leaders and young people - took part in Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 this week to encourage a greater awareness about these fantastic opportunities which are shaping the next generation of professionals.

As the week of activity draws to a close, DYW Glasgow took the opportunity to speak to Linda Murray from People and Development within Police Scotland, to discover how their new Modern Apprenticeship scheme – which launched in September 2018 – is shaping up.

Linda said:

“Our scheme got off to a flying start last September when we welcomed our first ever apprentices. The six new recruits are working in three key areas of the business for 18 months in a programme supported by Clyde Gateway and Jobs and Business Glasgow.

“Our apprentices are learning about the diverse work of Police Scotland while working towards an SVQ level 3 qualification in Business Administration. The six recruits are currently based in People and Development, Finance and Corporate Communications. 

“This initiative benefits the local community by employing young people from surrounding areas, teaching them the necessary skills to develop their career while giving them a competitive wage and the opportunity to gain a formal qualification.

 “We have been nurturing and guiding our apprentices on how to work and behave in a professional environment and I would anticipate that, as they near the end of their apprenticeship, they would be in a position to confidently apply for jobs and be competitive in the recruitment process.

“We are looking forward to starting another four apprentices after the exam season later this year and I believe the organisation and local communities will continue to benefit from this meaningful initiative.”
