At DYW Glasgow, we’re passionate about delivering on our promise to be a key link between business and learning.  Our nine employer ambassadors have a huge role to play in ensuring this happens – they advocate on our behalf to help increase awareness of DYW through their networks, and help to ensure our messages reach a wide and varied audience.

In this blog, we meet one of our nine ambassadors – Craig Martin, head of HR at Glasgow Airport – to find out how he got involved and what his role as an ambassador involves.

Since graduating from University of Strathclyde, Craig has spent his entire career as a HR professional working across various industrial sectors for companies such as the Weir Group and the McVitie’s division of United Biscuits. In January 2011, he joined Glasgow Airport as the Head of HR. In addition to his role at the airport, Craig is Chair of Glasgow Welcomes, the city’s tourism service initiative and is co-Chair of the Glasgow Employment and Skills Board which has responsibility for leading the Developing the Young Workforce initiative in the city.

Craig said:

“I’ve always been passionate about giving young people the opportunity to grow and fulfil their potential, and that is an ethos that runs through Glasgow Airport too.  For some time now, Glasgow Airport has had a formal partnership agreement with Notre Dame High School in Glasgow which involves staff across the airport campus helping their young people to prepare for the world of work.  It is through this partnership that I first learned about DYW Glasgow.

“I joined the DYW ambassador scheme around six months ago.  My role is to reach out to other organisations and explain how they can get involved with young people.  There are so many ways to get involved and there is something to suit all organisations, from SME’s through to multinational businesses. 

“Contrary to what many businesses think, starting up an apprenticeship scheme isn’t the only option.  There are lots of ways to connect with young people – helping out can be as simple as doing a presentation for S5s and S6s who are making career decisions, or S1s and S2s who are deciding what subjects to progress at school.

“Being involved with DYW Glasgow is incredibly fulfilling and I would urge other businesses to get involved too.”
