School: Parkhill Secondary School

Type of activity: Work Inspiration

Name of employer: BAE Systems, Glasgow Science Centre

Case Study

On 9th February 2026, the STEM Futures team from Glasgow Science Centre delivered an Interview Ready Workshop at BAE Systems Scotstoun Shipyard. Seven pupils from Parkhill, all in S5 and S6, took part in this interactive and highly engaging experience.

Workshop Structure

The session was designed to help young people develop confidence in interviews and understand the different ways employers assess skills. When the group arrived, pupils were divided into pairs. After a short introduction from the STEM Futures team, each pair began working through a series of planned activities.

Part 1: Skills-Based Challenges

Each group completed a range of problem solving tasks, including:
• Sudoku
• Logic and reasoning challenges
• Word-based puzzles
• Other timed problem-solving activities

Successfully completing each task revealed a code, which pupils used to open a small safe. Inside the safe, they found:
• Medals for first, second, and third place
• Materials needed for the second part of the workshop

This competitive element added excitement and encouraged teamwork, communication, and resilience.

Part 2: Interview Techniques

The second half of the workshop focused on interview preparation and practice. Instructors introduced key interview techniques, discussed what employers look for, and modelled effective responses.
Pupils then had the opportunity to:
• Practice interview questions
• Receive feedback
• Assess each other’s performance

This peer assessment element helped pupils reflect on their strengths and identify areas for improvement.

Objectives:

The workshop aimed to give an insight into the interviews system and allowed the young people to practice ahead of potential apprenticeship applications.

Results/Outcomes:

The pupils completed engaging, hands-on challenges and learned how to answer interview questions to highlight their strengths.

Benefits:

By combining hands on activities and interview practice the pupil gained some confidence.

Testimonials:

Pupil “I have really enjoyed the activities, and I am surprised of how good did I do! I feel more confident now”
