Case Study
S3 pupils from Hyndland Secondary School in Glasgow recently participated in an engaging and thought-provoking workshop delivered by Blackwood Group. The session focused on exploring the future of social care, particularly how it is being shaped by robotics, assistive technology, and digital innovation.
The workshop introduced pupils to the evolving landscape of care services, highlighting how emerging technologies are transforming the way support is delivered to individuals, particularly those with disabilities or additional needs. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, pupils gained insight into ongoing research and development in areas such as robotic assistants, smart home systems, and digital communication tools designed to enhance independence and quality of life.
Objectives:
A key objective of the session was to help pupils understand the growing role of robotics within the care sector. Facilitators encouraged participants to think critically about how these technologies can support inclusiveness and improve accessibility. Pupils explored questions such as: How can robots assist people with mobility challenges? In what ways can digital tools reduce isolation? What future innovations could make care more person-centred?

The results of the workshop were highly positive. Pupils demonstrated a clear understanding of how robotics can be used within the care sector and showed enthusiasm when discussing potential future applications. Many participants began to recognise that technology is not just about machines, but about improving people’s lives and creating more equitable access to care services. The session also helped broaden their perspectives on career pathways within social care and technology-related fields.
