Case Study
Captain Alan MacGregor, an experienced Airline Pilot from Jet2 based at Glasgow Airport delivered four Information Sessions and a Q&A to National 5 Travel & Tourism classes at St Mungo’s Academy. The aim of these sessions was to raise sector awareness of careers and jobs in Travel & Tourism, the Professional Services within the sector and Engineering within an Aviation context.
Alan spoke about his humble, working-class upbringing in Yoker Glasgow during the early 80s, when there was an expectation for young people, especially males to leave school and get a job in the shipyards. Alan talked about how he had overcome challenges from people who said his ambition to have a career as a Pilot was unrealistic and almost crazy, as “no one from Yoker becomes a Pilot”.
He inspired the young people during the sessions by speaking about his career pathway, which did have twists and turns, highlighting the importance of having a goal, determination, perseverance, and working hard. He also explained that where you come from does not determine your future; it’s okay to dream big and have ambitions.
Alan delivered a visual presentation to pupils about the large variety of career options within the sector, the key skills and attributes required plus the different routes and pathways. He highlighted the volume of jobs available locally and across Scotland.
During the session, pupils had the chance to ask their own questions.
The session received excellent feedback from pupils and teachers.
