#NoWrongPath – Emily Philpot, Barclays
Seven years ago I left school to study “Mathematical Studies” as the University of Leeds. My degree was unique in allowing me to dip my toes into the worlds of healthcare, social work and education, it even took me to the other side of the world to study them alongside Maths.
Despite loving my time at university, my real passion was always technology, I chose to study Mathematics because it was the subject I was confident in, and had intentions of ‘finding a path’ into tech later. It turns out I was on the right path all along.
In 2021 I joined Barclays as an Aspiring Developer, I was able to learn to code from scratch with colleagues who all came from non-technical backgrounds too. It surprised me daily how many of the skills we had gained in our degrees, such as problem solving, analytics and working in teams, were useful in thriving in our new jobs.
Today I logged on as a Software Engineer working with exciting technologies in a brilliant team, grateful I took the path that was just right for me.
