Work Aware – CCG

About the business:

The CCG Group is Scotland’s most innovative construction and manufacturing company and in 2024, we are celebrating 50 years of Building Futures. Established in 1974, the company has grown organically from humble beginnings as a small heating and plumbing contractor into a full-service construction and manufacturing group of eight subsidiary companies.

Why was the Work Aware programme of interest to you?

CCG takes pride in our engagement with schools. Whether it is the provision of educative talks on construction careers, site tours, work placements or mock interviews, we understand the value of telling young children and adults what is available to them in the construction industry – they are our future!

What activities have pupils undertaken during your Work Aware programme? Have you seen any changes in young people from start to finish?

For the Work Aware programme, CCG has provided a day of activities which represent our values as a company, what we expect from our employees and a chance to highlight the skills and attributes of the people that work at CCG. The programme included a tour of CCG UPVC factory and Off-Site Manufacturing with a member of staff giving an insight to their working day, and ended back at the CCG Hub to do a team building exercise highlighting the importance of communication and different aspects of a construction project.

What has been the highlight of your business’ Work Aware experience?

Due to the small size of each group coming along to the sessions, we were able to chat to the young people without the intimidation of a large group and formal presentation, allowing them to ask questions and discuss the different job roles. A highlight for CCG was providing a chance for these pupils to see a manufacturing facility in production and for them to really engage with the experience, from asking the staff their own questions to respecting health and safety within a busy working environment.

What about the Work Aware programme would you recommend to other businesses?

It’s an opportunity for staff to step back and show off the workplace which we take pride in. We forget the world of work is such a daunting place but giving this opportunity to pupils to see for themselves allows them to make a choice about the careers available and local to them.

What value do you feel that Work Aware and DYW in general can bring to your organisation?

DYW bridges the gap between employer and pupil, providing the opportunity to share with pupils and schools the diverse career opportunities within the construction industry.
