GROW programme off to an impressive start as young people begin workplace visits

The GROW programme has launched with strong momentum, bringing employers, schools and young people together in a shared mission to expand career confidence and real world work experience across the Glasgow City Region. Backed by investment from JPMorgan Chase and delivered by the regional DYW groups and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, GROW connects S3 pupils with meaningful workplace visits. Even in its early stages, the programme is demonstrating strong results.

In it’s first three weeks alone, GROW has delivered over 2,000 hours of meaningful work experience to young people, a significant achievement that reflects the strength of collaboration across the region. Some of Scotland’s best known organisations are already involved, including the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS), Morgan Stanley, ScottishPower and Openreach.

This level of participation reflects a shared belief across industries that early exposure to the workplace helps young people build the confidence, ambition and insight they need to make informed choices about their futures.

Young people involved in the programme have already explored a wide range of work environments including the Sea Life Centre, Rolls Royce, ACS Clothing, EY Foundation and AC Whyte. These visits are far more than simple school outings. They are structured, hands on learning experiences designed to open up the world of work and show how different sectors operate. So far, 179 students from three DYW regions have taken part, many stepping into a workplace setting for the first time.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Reflecting on their first hosted visit, AC Whyte shared:

“We are incredibly proud to be involved in GROW, working alongside Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, DYW Glasgow, DYW LED and DYW West and the wider business community to help young people connect with real workplaces and experiences that inspire confidence and ambition. This is one of many engagement sessions we have committed to, and we are looking forward to continuing our work with the team to deliver a meaningful, impactful programme for young people and for the future of our workforce.”

The early success of GROW highlights its potential to shift perspectives, raise aspirations and help young people understand the pathways available to them. As more employers join the programme, opportunities will continue to expand, broadening horizons and deepening impact across the region.

We are now inviting more organisations to get involved. Hosting a GROW group is straightforward, well supported and immensely rewarding for businesses and young people. We take care of all logistics, including minibus transport, a dedicated youth worker, and a lunch budget for every young person.

If you would like to learn more about hosting or becoming part of GROW, we would be delighted to hear from you.
