Case Study

Made in Glasgow is a cross-school competition held at Buchanan Galleries shopping centre. S3 pupils from St Mungo’s Academy went head-to-head with Shawlands Academy in a ‘Dragons Den’ style pitch and challenge to design brand new areas for shoppers.

The challenge focused on the centre’s redevelopment plans with sustainability and Instagrammable attractions in mind.

The activities began in January with hands on workshops held in the management suite at the shopping centre. The enterprise programme contributed to the Scottish Government’s Career Information, Advice and Guidance Strategy.

Working in groups, the young people were given a brief and set the challenge of reimagining the shopping centre. They attended workshops on creative place making, community and customer insights and environmental sustainability hosted by employers and professionals’ from Buchanan Galleries and shopping centre owner Landsec. The pupils learned what they needed to know about taking an idea from its first draft, to a design, then pitch. They were taken on a guided tour of the shopping centre; a chance to explore the operations side of the business and the different job roles available.

During February and early March, the pupils worked on their ideas, designs, presentation and pitch.

The groups delivered an excellent pitch to the judges and were runners up in the competition.
