Work Aware – COWI
About the business:
Together with customers, partners and colleagues, COWI UK Limited shapes a future where people and societies grow and flourish. We do that by co-creating sustainable and beautiful solutions that improve the quality of life for people today and many generations ahead. Our starting point is gaining a deep understanding of our customers, their aspirations and concerns. This is what sets us apart and how we deliver long-term value. Primarily located in Scandinavia, the UK, North America and India, we offer our expertise in engineering, architecture, energy and environment.
Why was the Work Aware programme of interest to you?
COWI UK Limited has pledged a commitment to the Young Person’s Guarantee which includes helping to prepare young people for the world of work. Through initiatives like Work Aware, we’re committed to guiding the next generation towards fulfilling careers by exposing them to the wealth of opportunities that await.
What activities have pupils undertaken during your Work Aware programme? Have you seen any changes in young people from start to finish?
We had the pleasure of welcoming six young individuals from Lochend Community High School to our Glasgow office, in collaboration with our partner, QTS Group. The day was filled with meaningful conversations, where our team members, including Alan Beebe, an Associate Project Manager with 23 years at COWI, shared their personal career stories, offered a glimpse into our operations, and provided practical advice on job applications.
What has been the highlight of your business’ Work Aware experience?
It’s always great to see young people who are enthusiastic about learning and wanting to find out more about possible future career options. By sharing our experiences, we want to help those young people realise that there are so many different opportunities out there for the taking.
What about the Work Aware programme would you recommend to other businesses?
The programme offered the opportunity to collaborate with a client to showcase the variety of roles on offer within the industry. It also allowed colleagues to share their experiences of going directly into the workplace from school and their career journeys.
What value do you feel that Work Aware and DYW in general can bring to your organisation?
Connecting businesses and engaging with young people to start conversations about our industry and the job roles available.
Quote from employer
“I was delighted to be asked to present ‘My Career Journey So Far’ as I have had first-hand experience of starting an apprenticeship straight from school while still trying to discover the correct career path for myself. I think my ever-developing career journey within COWI shows the progression that can be made and the rewards that are possible once you find a career that you enjoy doing and have the support of your organisation and colleagues.”
Alan Beebe, Associate Project Manager, COWI UK Limited
