DYW Glasgow team up with BBC to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities

In order to mark the 2017 International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, the DYW Glasgow team was delighted to participate in our partner school Hollybrook Academy’s wheelchair basketball tournament.  Team member Nicholas joined forces with industry partner the BBC to compete in two fixtures - one against pupils and one against members of staff in what turned out to be two hard-fought contests.

After a quick run through from Mr Milne in how to use the chairs safely and efficiently, it was off we went with the BBC/DYW team emerging victorious in the first fixture and the staff and pupils battling it out next.  With the staff claiming victory over pupils, the final fixture was the title decider which saw Hollybrook staff (supplemented by some stand out talent from the school roll) take the narrow victory and all the plaudits.

This was a wonderful event enjoyed by all and it was certainly agreed that we all ‘caught the bug’ - talk of a rematch next year was a hot topic in the changing rooms. The pupils were a credit to both themselves and the school, showed the highest levels of sportsmanship and effort throughout the morning and really impressed in what was for most their first taste of wheelchair basketball.

A big thanks goes to the BBC for their continued support and for allowing Nicholas to participate in his first solo event for the team and to Hollybrook for making us feel so welcome; especially for supplying the rolls and bacon!

We look forward to continued partnership working and hopefully a victory in next year’s event!
